The White Charcoal Initiative

We are a team of architects, engineers, artisans, and craftsmen based in the foothills of the Himalayan ranges of Kumaon. The practice was conceived on the idea that buildings can serve as a bridge between nature, culture, and people and that inspiring surroundings should have a positive effect on people’s lives. We take pride in being a multidisciplinary practice and believe that it’s our strength.

The aim is to create habitable built environments and interpret sustainability in our own way. The roots of our design language lie in the embodiment of the vernacular.

We create built environments in various forms and scales, undertaking projects that include huts, high-rise buildings, homes, cultural and civic spaces, places of worship, creative production facilities, refurbishments, and interior designs.

Our experimentation with materials in relation to the context transforms each project into a unique journey filled with distinct challenges. In this process, people, the community, and craftsmen come together to collaborate, resulting in designs that are intriguing, eco-friendly, and responsive to climate considerations.
